4 Tips: Enjoy the Holiday Without Going Off the Rails

The holidays are upon us, and while they may look a bit different this year, chances are you will still plan to celebrate with some festive food and drink this season (and you should).

Here are some quick, helpful tips and tricks for navigating the holidays so that you can still enjoy yourself without expanding your waistline.

Tip #1: Don't skip meals to "save room" for indulgence

Many of us tend to skip breakfast and lunch so that we can eat ALL OF THE THINGS during our holiday meal. And while this makes sense in theory, the plan often backfires; when we choose to restrict ourselves all day, we are RAVENOUS come dinner time and end up eating too much (way more than we would've otherwise) and ultimately feeling bloated and uncomfortable as a result. You're better off eating a sensible meal or snack prior to dinner - this way, you're less inclined to pile on the second and third helpings of Grandma's pecan pie.

Tip #2: Load up on those veggies

When navigating the appetizer spread, gravitate to those colorful, vitamin and fiber-packed vegetable platters first (most gatherings will have the obligatory "healthy" snack option). By snacking on this before anything else, you will have less room for the bacon-wrapped dates and salami/cheese board. Plus, who says these veggie platters can't be exciting or delicious? Try pairing it with a zesty homemade hummus, tzatziki, or other spread to spice things up a bit.

Tip #3: Go for a walk, jog, or casual stroll

If your post-holiday dinner plans involve passing out on the couch watching Football, be sure to get in some activity beforehand. This could be anything from a brisk morning walk to an easy-paced jog - just get that blood flowing and metabolism revving. Another great idea? Go for a casual after-dinner stroll to walk off some of that heavy feeling - you'll be happy you did!

Tip #4: Enjoy the day, guilt-free

Yes, the holidays are going to look a bit different this year for most of us. But you can still make it special.

Cook together.

Eat with intention.

Set the table nicely.

Say what you're thankful for.

Enjoy that pie.

Take a nap.

Watch a movie.

...and enjoy your day free of guilt, because you should. One day will not derail your progress. Just get right back on it tomorrow ;-)
